Smart Weigh Targets Ready Meal Growth With Integrated Weighing And Packing Systems

Smart Weigh Packaging Machinery is positioning integrated weighing, filling and packaging systems as a way for ready meal manufacturers to streamline production and manage increasingly complex product portfolios.

The company said food producers are facing growing pressure to improve efficiency while accommodating a wider range of recipes, ingredients and packaging formats. While packaging automation is widely established across the ready meal sector, weighing and portioning operations often remain separate from the main production line, creating additional handling steps and increasing the risk of inefficiencies.

Smart Weigh’s Ready Meal Packing System is designed to combine weighing, filling and packaging within a single workflow. The system integrates multihead weighing technology with pump filling systems, allowing both solid ingredients and sauces to be processed on the same line. According to the company, the platform can be used for a variety of applications including rice dishes, pasta products, frozen meals and other multi-component ready meal formats.

The company said the integrated approach can support manufacturers producing compartment trays by allowing multiple weighing stations to portion ingredients such as rice, vegetables and proteins independently before depositing them into designated tray sections. These weighing stations are then linked with tray handling, filling and packaging equipment to create a continuous production process.

Smart Weigh argues that reducing handoffs between production stages can simplify scheduling and improve line utilisation, particularly as ready meal manufacturers continue to expand their product offerings.

The company cited a 2025 forecast from Research and Markets projecting that the global ready meals market will grow from USD 236.82 billion in 2025 to USD 328.41 billion by 2030, driven by continued demand for convenience foods.

Beyond ready meals, Smart Weigh is applying similar automation concepts to snack and pet food production. Its dual vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) snack packing system combines two bagging stations with a single shared multihead weigher and can achieve speeds of up to 180 packs per minute, according to the company. The system is designed for products including potato chips, popcorn, nuts and mixed snacks.

In the pet food sector, Smart Weigh offers systems that combine weighing for solid ingredients with separate liquid dosing systems for gravies and broths. The company said the technology can handle vacuum pouches, jars, bottles and cans while supporting rapid cleaning and changeovers between production runs.

The company said food manufacturers are increasingly evaluating suppliers based on their ability to integrate complete production lines rather than individual pieces of equipment.

Smart Weigh, founded in 2012 and headquartered in Zhongshan, China, said it has delivered more than 2,000 systems to over 1,000 customers in more than 50 countries and regions. Its portfolio includes feeding, weighing, filling, packaging, inspection, cartoning and palletising equipment for food manufacturing applications.

“Food manufacturers are seeking automation solutions that support both operational efficiency and production flexibility,” said Hanson Wong, CEO of Smart Weigh. “As product diversity continues to grow across food categories, integrated workflows are becoming increasingly important. Our focus is on helping manufacturers simplify production processes while building systems that can adapt to changing operational requirements.”

The company operates service centres in the United States, Spain, Indonesia and Dubai, providing support including layout planning, commissioning, training and spare parts services for food manufacturers deploying automated production lines.
