Cascades has launched lithoURB, a recycled brown paperboard developed for high-end lithographic printing in corrugated packaging and folding cartons.
The company describes the material as 100% recycled and recyclable, targeting food processing, beverage, fresh produce and consumer goods applications. It is intended to combine the appearance of brown recycled board with the print quality required for branded retail packaging.
Cascades said the board was developed to maintain mechanical performance and processing efficiency while providing an alternative to virgin-fibre options.
According to the company, packaging made with lithoURB can carry FSC Mix or 100% recycled certification, is pre-qualified as recyclable by How2Recycle and meets BRCGS food-safety requirements.
“Cascades lithoURB provides our customers with eco-friendly packaging–a key factor when choosing products in stores,” said Hugues Simon, president and chief executive.
The company is positioning the material particularly for brands seeking to communicate organic, artisanal or environmental attributes through packaging design.
Cascades said the product had received The Shelby Report’s Sustainability in the Food Industry Award and reached the finals of the Retail Council of Canada’s Retail Sustainability Awards.
