The Portuguese packaging manufacturer Intraplas has commissioned its first production site in the United States, opening a fully operational facility in Van Wert, Ohio, following an initial investment of about €40 million. The expansion marks a significant step in the company’s internationalisation strategy and its efforts to enhance customer proximity in the North American food packaging market.
According to the company, installation and technical ramp-up at the site have been completed, together with all certifications required for the US food sector, including approvals from the Food and Drug Administration and the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Interstate Milk Shippers (IMS) programme. Intraplas said the facility will serve applications across dairy, plant-based foods and desserts.
The company described the new plant as strategically important for “the global development of the group,” adding that the location will consolidate its position in the United States and support its long-term corporate objectives. Intraplas also emphasised the role of cross-border institutional cooperation during the investment process, citing support from the US Embassy in Portugal, the Portuguese Embassy in Washington, JobsOhio, the Regional Growth Partnership and the Van Wert Area Economic Development Corporation.
The official inauguration ceremony is scheduled for spring 2026 and is expected to bring together employees, customers, business partners and representatives of Portuguese and US institutions.
Founded in 1968 and headquartered in northern Portugal, Intraplas specialises in the manufacturing and distribution of packaging solutions, with capabilities in extrusion, thermoforming and printing.
