Mondi Group, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has unveiled its sixth annual eCommerce trend report, “Sustainability and its impact on packaging and online shopping choices.” The comprehensive study, conducted in late 2024, surveyed approximately 6,000 consumers across Czechia, France, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and Türkiye, offering valuable insights into evolving consumer behaviors and expectations in the eCommerce sector.
Significant Increase in Online Shopping Frequency
The report highlights a notable surge in online shopping frequency, with 71% of consumers now making purchases online at least once a month, up from 56% the previous year. This trend underscores the growing importance for eCommerce brands to adapt to changing consumer habits and preferences.
Consumer Preferences: Sustainability and Packaging
Sustainability has emerged as a critical factor influencing consumer choices. Key findings include:
•Recyclable Packaging: A substantial 90% of consumers favor brands that utilize recyclable and appropriately sized eCommerce packaging.
•Environmental Consciousness: 80% of respondents emphasize the importance of environmentally friendly or recyclable packaging materials.
•Product Protection: An overwhelming 95% prioritize packaging that ensures product safety during transit.
•Unboxing Experience: 59% of consumers indicate that the quality of packaging influences their decision to make repeat purchases. This sentiment is particularly strong among Gen Z consumers, with 71% valuing both aesthetics and recyclability in packaging.
Trust and Transparency in Sustainability Claims
Despite the heightened demand for sustainable practices, only 50% of consumers trust brands’ sustainability claims. This skepticism highlights the necessity for transparency and authenticity in environmental initiatives. Brands are encouraged to provide clear, verifiable information about their sustainability efforts to build consumer trust.
Industry Implications: Aligning with Consumer Expectations
For businesses in the packaging industry, these insights underscore the imperative to adopt sustainable, protective, and aesthetically pleasing packaging solutions. Aligning with consumer expectations not only enhances brand loyalty but also positions companies favorably in a competitive market.
Armand Schoonbrood, Mondi Group eCommerce COO, emphasized the business imperative of sustainability, stating, “This year’s findings confirm that sustainability is no longer just a trend; it’s a business imperative.” RetailX Chief Editor, Ian Jindal, reinforced this perspective, noting, “Sustainable eCommerce packaging has become more than a preference – it’s now a consumer expectation.”
