ePac Flexible Packaging has introduced a new range of Easy Open Barrier Films aimed at coffee brands seeking to improve consumer convenience while maintaining high levels of product protection. The launch adds to the company’s growing portfolio of digitally printed flexible packaging solutions designed for fast-moving and brand-driven markets.
The new films are engineered with a smooth, peelable opening mechanism that allows coffee bags to be opened cleanly and effortlessly, without the need for scissors or traditional tear notches. According to the company, the easy-open functionality is intended to enhance accessibility and overall user experience, while preserving the integrity of the pack.
Beyond ease of opening, the films deliver high-barrier performance designed to protect coffee from oxygen, moisture, and aroma loss. Maintaining freshness and flavor over extended shelf life remains a critical requirement for roasters, particularly in premium and specialty coffee segments, where packaging plays a key role in brand perception and product quality.
Formats And Production Flexibility
The Easy Open Barrier Films are available in both rollstock and quad-seal pouch formats and have been developed specifically for the North American market. ePac said the materials are compatible with a wide range of production environments, supporting both vertical and horizontal form, fill, and seal equipment, as well as quad-seal applications.
This equipment compatibility allows coffee brands to integrate the films into existing packaging lines without major changes, reducing barriers to adoption. The company also emphasized low minimum order quantities and short lead times, positioning the films as a practical option for brands launching new products, limited editions, or seasonal offerings.
By supporting multiple SKUs and rapid changeovers, the films align with the operational realities of smaller and mid-sized roasters, as well as larger brands experimenting with differentiated product ranges.
Digital Printing As A Differentiator
The Easy Open Barrier Films are produced using ePac’s digital print platform, which the company said enables fast turnaround times, vibrant graphics, and on-demand ordering. Digital printing allows brands to avoid large inventory commitments and reduce the risk of obsolete packaging, particularly in a category where design refreshes and promotional packs are common.
For coffee brands operating in competitive retail and direct-to-consumer channels, the ability to quickly adjust artwork, messaging, or pack sizes can offer a commercial advantage. ePac noted that its order-to-demand model supports shorter product lifecycles and greater responsiveness to market trends.
Positioning Within A Broader Network
Founded in 2016, ePac Flexible Packaging has expanded from a single facility in Madison, Wisconsin, into a global network of 22 manufacturing sites across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, and Africa. The company operates under its proprietary ePacONE (One Network Everywhere) platform, which standardizes production and quality across locations.
Sustainability remains a core element of ePac’s positioning. The company offers a range of eco-friendly film options and operates a carbon-neutral digital print technology platform. Its production model is designed to help brands minimize excess inventory and reduce waste, aligning packaging operations more closely with demand.
With the launch of Easy Open Barrier Films, ePac is targeting a specific pain point in coffee packaging—balancing consumer convenience with high-performance protection—while reinforcing its broader strategy of flexible, digitally driven packaging solutions for brand owners.
As competition intensifies in the specialty and premium coffee markets, packaging innovations that combine functionality, shelf appeal, and operational flexibility are likely to play an increasingly important role in brand differentiation.
