Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) has introduced kp Evolve® Fish Boards, a mono-material PET solution developed for vacuum skin packaging (VSP) applications in processed fish, as the company continues to expand its portfolio of recyclable packaging formats.
The newly launched boards can incorporate up to 100% recycled content, positioning them to support brand owners in meeting tightening regulatory requirements across European markets. Their mono-PET construction is designed to simplify recyclability while also reducing extended producer responsibility (EPR) fees in most EU countries, according to the company.
Beyond material composition, kp has focused on logistics and operational efficiency. The boards feature a lightweight structure and an open-flap design intended to maximise pallet utilisation, contributing to improved transport efficiency across supply chains.
From a performance standpoint, the kp Evolve® Fish Boards are engineered to deliver consistent vacuum-skin performance and high shelf clarity, key parameters in retail presentation and product protection. The packs are compatible with established PET recycling streams, aligning with existing waste management infrastructure.
A central element of the design is kp Zapora® retention-chamber geometry, which eliminates the need for absorbent pads and adhesives. The system channels released liquids away from the product into micro-vacuum retention zones, reducing visible liquid build-up and lowering the risk of leakage during handling and distribution.
Paul Rawlings, Launch Manager at kp Food Packaging, said: “kp Evolve® Fish Boards are engineered for smooth runs on high-speed automated packing lines thanks to the board’s central section, which enhances overall strength and processing efficiency. Available in a wide range of sizes, the boards meet UK and EU design-for-recycling requirements. And when brands choose to include kp Tray2Tray® recycled PET, the solution supports a closed-loop system for food trays.”
He added: “For brands looking to advance their sustainability commitments and reduce environmental impact without compromising on performance, kp Evolve® Fish Boards offer an effective and commercially ready solution.”
The design also addresses consumer usability. The structure allows end users to remove the product cleanly without residue, while the pack itself can be rinsed and recycled within existing PET collection systems.
With the introduction of kp Evolve® Fish Boards, kp is targeting seafood processors seeking to balance recyclability, operational efficiency and pack performance within VSP formats.
