Your Coffee Taste Uses Sonoco GreenCan For On-Demand Coffee Model

Sonoco Consumer Packaging EMEA has partnered with direct-to-consumer coffee platform your coffee taste® to develop a personalised packaging format based on its GreenCan® paper-based can.

The collaboration supports your coffee taste®’s on-demand roasting model, in which consumers define their flavour preferences through a platform and app before coffee is selected and roasted after ordering. According to the companies, this model is designed to maximise freshness while avoiding the need for pre-produced inventory.

Packaging is a central part of the system. The GreenCan® format used for the project includes integrated barrier properties designed to allow CO₂ to escape while preventing oxygen from entering, making it suitable for freshly roasted whole beans. The can also provides protection against moisture and oxygen in a rigid format intended to support the brand’s premium positioning.

Personalisation extends to the exterior of the pack. Sonoco and your coffee taste® developed a direct-to-can digital printing solution that allows individual consumer designs to be printed directly onto the GreenCan®. The process uses HP PageWide print technology and a Cando printing system from IdeeGo GmbH.

The companies said the approach enables fully personalised consumer packaging, as well as campaign-based designs and customised B2B coffee solutions aligned with corporate identities.

“We are rethinking coffee as a fully personalised experience. That means challenging conventions at every level, including how coffee is produced, packaged and delivered,” said Peter Schöffler, founder of your coffee taste®.

“Our on-demand approach requires a packaging solution that actively supports freshness, not just preserves it. With Sonoco’s GreenCan®, we found exactly that: a solution that allows freshly roasted coffee to degas while protecting it from oxygen.”

Schöffler added that taking personalisation to the packaging required “a true engineering innovation,” with direct digital printing turning each can into “a unique touchpoint” for consumers or branded B2B experiences.

GreenCan® is described by Sonoco as a high paper-content package, containing up to 98% paper made from 100% recycled paper boards. The company said the format is designed to combine barrier functionality with recyclability and reduced environmental impact.

The collaboration also reflects growing regulatory and market pressure around packaging materials, particularly under the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which is increasing expectations on recyclability, material reduction and responsible sourcing.

“We are seeing a clear acceleration towards paper packaging solutions for dry products,” said Francesco Giannolo, VP Commercial at Sonoco Consumer Packaging EMEA/APAC. “With GREENCAN®, we support innovative brands like your coffee taste® in joining this transition—combining performance, design flexibility and alignment with the direction of PPWR and circularity requirements.”

Coffee consumers will be able to experience your coffee taste® at interpack, where a dedicated coffee bar will be hosted at the Sonoco stand in Hall 9, stand C34, on May 11 and 12.
