MOL Lubricants Introduces Bag-In-Box Format To Cut Plastic Use

MOL Lubricants has introduced a new packaging format for its product range, replacing traditional canisters with a bag-in-box system designed to reduce plastic use and streamline handling. Beginning in September, the company will offer its engine and transmission oils in 5- and 20-litre formats as part of what it describes as a wider push toward more sustainable packaging.

The design incorporates a smart tap mechanism intended to deliver clean and precise dispensing while avoiding drips and spillage. According to the company, the 20-litre bag-in-box uses 80% less plastic than the current canister and reduces waste volume by a factor of twelve. MOL also notes that the outer cardboard box is fully recyclable once the inner bag has been removed.

The company highlights a series of logistical advantages linked to the new format. Its compact structure allows up to 88% more units to be loaded onto a single pallet, which MOL says could lower transportation costs by as much as 40%, depending on delivery conditions. The firm positions these efficiencies as attractive to workshops and industrial users seeking to cut emissions and reduce operational overheads.

Nineteen lubricants—including engine and transmission oils—will be available in the new bag-in-box packaging during the initial phase of the roll-out. MOL frames the shift as part of its wider commitment to sustainability and packaging innovation.
