Amcor Unveils AmSecure™ Thermoformed APET Platform, Targets PETG Replacement in Healthcare Packaging

Amcor plc has unveiled AmSecure™, a new thermoformed tray and rollstock solution designed for the pharmaceutical and healthcare sectors, marking a strategic shift toward greater sustainability and cost efficiency in medical packaging.

According to Amcor, AmSecure is based on amorphous PET (APET) rather than the commonly used PETG glycol material. The company states this gives comparable mechanical and visual performance — including clarity, durability and sterilisation compatibility — while offering a “cost-effective” and “more environmentally sustainable” alternative.

“AmSecure™ represents a significant advancement in healthcare packaging by delivering APET-based thermoformed solutions that match the mechanical and visual performance of PETG, while offering cost efficiency and a path towards recyclability,” said Art Castro, vice-president of Amcor Flexibles Healthcare in North America. “The Amcor solution meets the critical needs of customers without compromising production and line performance.”

The solution has been recognised under the voluntary Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) “Design for Recyclability” programme, underscoring its recyclability credentials according to Amcor.

Amcor says AmSecure will be supported by a full portfolio including compatible lids and pouches, providing healthcare customers with an integrated offering. The company also highlights supply-chain resilience as a design feature: the material is qualified with multiple raw-material supply options to enhance continuity.

Industry commentators say the launch comes at a moment when medical and pharmaceutical device packaging is under increasing pressure to meet stricter hygiene, visual-quality, cost and circularity demands. The introduction of an APET-based solution to supplant PETG reflects broader material substitution trends in healthcare packaging markets.

For packaging specifiers and procurement teams in pharma, the key takeaway from Amcor’s announcement is the alignment of asset-cost reduction, recyclability and manufacturing line compatibility — all delivered under the umbrella of the company’s HealthCare portfolio innovation drive.
