Aldi has announced a major sustainability initiative in its UK stores, removing plastic windows and trays from several savoury products starting November 27, 2024. The new cardboard packaging will be used for the Specially Selected pies, quiches, and Crestwood frittatas, among others. This shift will eliminate 127 tonnes of unnecessary plastic packaging annually. The move reflects Aldi’s broader commitment to reducing its environmental impact, following earlier trials in which the retailer removed pulp trays and punnets from fruit and vegetable lines, potentially saving 370 additional tonnes of plastic if extended across the UK.
Luke Emery, Aldi’s Plastics and Packaging Director, emphasized the supermarket’s dedication to sustainability: “We know our customers care about our environmental commitments, and these changes help make their daily shop more eco-friendly.”
These efforts are part of a wider industry trend toward minimizing plastic waste, as retailers respond to growing consumer demand for environmentally responsible packaging.
