Amcor has appointed Stephen Scherger, the long-serving chief financial officer of Graphic Packaging International (GPI), as its new CFO effective 10 November 2025, marking a significant leadership transition within the global packaging industry.
Scherger joins Amcor after a decade in the same role at GPI, where he played what the company described as “a leading role in transforming Graphic Packaging into the world’s largest producer of fibre-based packaging, including supporting the integration and synergy realization for a number of large-scale acquisitions.” During his tenure, GPI’s net sales more than doubled, supported by deals such as the 2018 combination with International Paper’s North American consumer packaging business and the 2021 acquisition of AR Packaging for USD 1.45 billion.
Before joining GPI, Scherger held finance, operations, and strategy positions at MeadWestvaco, later part of WestRock.
“It is a privilege to join Amcor as CFO,” Scherger said. “Amcor has established itself as a global leader and innovator in the packaging industry, especially after the Berry Global acquisition. I am honored and excited to join the team at this time and contribute to delivering the ongoing integration commitments, the identified portfolio optimization and driving long-term organic growth.”
Scherger succeeds Michael Casamento, who has served as Amcor’s CFO for the past ten years. Casamento will remain with the company as an advisor until 30 June 2026.
The appointment marks Amcor’s second major C-suite change in two years, following the 2024 promotion of Peter Konieczny to chief executive officer.
At GPI, Charles Lischer, currently chief accounting officer, will take over as interim CFO. GPI plans to release its third-quarter results on 4 November, with Scherger remaining through the reporting period before his departure on 7 November.
