Mondi has expanded its food packaging portfolio with the introduction of new corrugated and solid board solutions, reinforcing its position as a major supplier to Europe’s food sector. The development follows the group’s acquisition of Schumacher Packaging and adds both solid board applications and enhanced digital printing capabilities to Mondi’s existing offering.
The company stated that the enlarged portfolio now spans “one of the most comprehensive ranges of food packaging on the market – from corrugated and solid board solutions to a full range of flexible packaging.” By integrating Schumacher Packaging’s operations, Mondi has also deepened its regional supply network with additional production sites across Europe.
Responding To Sector Pressures
The launch comes as food manufacturers face growing regulatory scrutiny, retail-driven eco-design requirements, and rapid shifts in consumer demand. According to Paulus Goëss, Chief Operating Officer Corrugated Solutions at Mondi, “The food sector is undergoing rapid change, with sustainability targets, EU legislation and shifting consumer behaviours all driving new requirements for packaging. By expanding our portfolio, we can help customers respond to these trends with solutions that are lighter, more sustainable and optimised for shelf appeal.”
Mondi said the new range targets three major industry trends: lightweighting in response to demand for smaller portions and reduced material use; greater emphasis on Retail Ready Packaging and point-of-sale visibility; and the transition toward fibre-based solutions that are renewable or recyclable in line with EU directives such as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
Expanded Applications Across Food Segments
The portfolio now covers all major food segments. For fresh produce, Mondi offers ventilated trays, boxes and stackable formats within its Grow&Go line, alongside octabins for bulk transport. In meat, poultry and seafood, the company has introduced high-strength trays, leakproof boxes, sleeves and wraps designed to support food safety and extend shelf life.
The expansion includes ventilated trays, multipacks and sleeves for dairy products, while frozen food applications now feature solid board boxes equipped with high-quality printing for retail visibility and deep-freeze performance. For snacks and confectionery, Mondi provides shelf-ready packaging, customised point-of-sale displays, multipacks, wraps and formats such as its TwinBox solution. Beverage-sector offerings include multipacks, wraparounds, trays and fibre-based clips for PET bottles—among them Mondi’s Hug&Hold concept—as well as TankerBox for bulk handling.
Beyond supermarket channels, Mondi has also strengthened its position in e-commerce for grocery distribution. The group now offers fibre-based solutions with varied closure systems, inserts, and designs intended to simplify packing and improve consumer handling.
Strengthened Regional Supply Through Integration
The acquisition of Schumacher Packaging provides Mondi with broader production capabilities and increased supply reliability across Europe. The company noted that its accredited Food Safety and Performance Labs support customised development and verification of food-contact packaging, while its ThinkBox hubs allow customers and technical teams to collaborate on design and process optimisation.
The integration has also enhanced Mondi’s printing capabilities. The company highlighted its expanded range of digital, flexo and offset printing technologies, including an extension of its six-colour digital printing platform for corrugated packaging. Mondi is “one of the first in the industry” to offer white digital ink for corrugated applications, addressing rising demand for white printed graphics on brown substrates.
