Monterey Mushrooms Expands Sustainable Top Seal Packaging Nationwide

Monterey Mushrooms has announced a national rollout of its top seal packaging, extending the initiative from its Madisonville, Texas farm to operations in Loudon, Tennessee, and Morgan Hill, California.

The packaging uses rPET tills made entirely from post-consumer recycled materials and incorporates near-infrared (NIR) colorant, ensuring recyclability within conventional waste streams. The move underscores the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and advancing circular economy practices.

The new format offers multiple benefits across the supply chain, from improved freshness and shelf life to greater merchandising efficiency. Retailers gain more effective use of display space, while consumers benefit from clearer date codes and a more consistent presentation.

Lindsey Occhipinti, marketing manager at Monterey Mushrooms, highlighted the added value of enhanced communication opportunities through the new design. “An extensive study by the Mushroom Council to gauge consumer attitudes and behaviors related to fresh mushrooms found that adding nutrition labeling to mushroom packaging may help increase sales,” she said. “Details about vitamin D have the greatest influence. Mushrooms are packed with a powerful combination of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.”

Occhipinti added that the use of black rPET tills with NIR colorant helps keep packaging in circulation while preserving product quality. “By using black rPET tills with NIR colorant, we ensure our packages remain part of a circular economy while maintaining the unbeatable freshness and quality our customers expect.”

The nationwide expansion reflects Monterey Mushrooms’ wider strategy of combining product innovation with sustainability to strengthen its position in the U.S. produce market.
