Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, announced its agreement to acquire the Western European operations of Schumacher Packaging, significantly expanding Mondi’s corrugated packaging footprint. The acquisition, valued at EUR634m, covers Schumacher’s corrugated converting and solid board operations in Germany, Benelux, and the UK, including seven corrugated plants, two solid board mills, and four solid board converting plants. This deal will increase Mondi’s production capacity by over 1 billion square meters annually, primarily serving eCommerce and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors.
This acquisition brings in two advanced “mega-box” plants in Germany (Ebersdorf and Greven), known for their state-of-the-art production and skilled workforce. It complements Mondi’s existing operations in Central and Eastern Europe and strengthens its ability to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions, particularly in Germany, the largest packaging market in Europe.
Mondi Group CEO, Andrew King, highlighted that this move will broaden Mondi’s customer offering with a complementary range of fibre-based products and position the company for future growth. Key leaders from Schumacher Packaging, Björn Schumacher and Hendrik Schumacher, will remain involved to ensure a smooth transition and support the business’s future development.
The deal is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2025, providing Mondi with a stronger platform for growth in sustainable packaging across Western Europe.
