SÜDPACK Launches EcoTrace for Data-Driven Life Cycle Assessments in Flexible Packaging

SÜDPACK has introduced EcoTrace, a cutting-edge life cycle assessment (LCA) service designed to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the environmental impact of its flexible packaging solutions. This holistic, data-driven approach allows for in-depth analysis of every stage in a product’s life cycle, offering insights to help customers make informed decisions regarding sustainability and packaging optimization.

EcoTrace leverages various scenarios and projections to help companies compare packaging concepts and achieve ambitious environmental goals. The service focuses on key impact categories such as greenhouse gas emissions, fossil resource consumption, human and eco-toxicity, and energy consumption, taking a cradle-to-grave approach. SÜDPACK uses EcoTrace to optimize both its own products and customer concepts, ensuring sustainability is built into packaging solutions from the outset.

In a recent study, SÜDPACK collaborated with Sphera to conduct an LCA on its Flow Pack PurePP solution, a mono-material flexible film with a recyclability rate of 92%. The study compared the environmental impact of different end-of-life scenarios—such as mechanical and chemical recycling, as well as thermal recovery—and examined the effect of different energy sources during production. The results indicated that mechanical recycling reduced CO₂ emissions by approximately 50g CO₂e/m² compared to thermal recovery, making it a more sustainable option.

SÜDPACK’s EcoTrace provides valuable data for fact-based product development and can be easily integrated into customers’ LCA software, making it a practical tool for businesses committed to minimizing their ecological footprint while maintaining high-quality packaging solutions.
