TOPPAN Expands Sustainable Film Production With Hybrid BOPP–BOPE Line in India

TOPPAN Inc., part of Japan’s TOPPAN Group, has introduced a new hybrid manufacturing line at its India-based subsidiary, TOPPAN Speciality Films Private Limited (TSF), capable of producing both biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) and biaxially-oriented polyethylene (BOPE) films on the same machine.

The new line, which will begin mass production in mid-November, increases TSF’s overall film production capacity by around 40%. It enables the company to serve packaging converters and brand owners in the food and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors across India and global markets.

The installation marks a strategic expansion of TOPPAN’s sustainable packaging operations. With growing demand for recycle-ready mono-material packaging—particularly in Europe, where manufacturers are transitioning from PET to BOPP and BOPE films—TSF’s new capability strengthens the Group’s global supply network for flexible packaging.

The company said the hybrid line combines efficiency with advanced quality control, enabling “high-speed, high-quality management” that delivers consistent thickness, transparency, and mechanical strength across film types. The facility will also support brands in meeting India’s Plastic Waste Management Rules and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements through improved recyclability and lower environmental impact.

According to the company, the addition of the hybrid line forms part of TOPPAN’s broader strategy to enhance its “technology and cost performance for sustainable packaging” through an integrated global network spanning film production, barrier processing, and package converting.

By 2027, TSF aims to raise its annual film sales volume to approximately 33,000 tons, driven by the increased output of both BOPP and BOPE films. The films will also support the expansion of TOPPAN’s GL BARRIER portfolio, a proprietary line of transparent barrier films that provide high barrier performance through a multilayer coating and vapor-deposited structure.

TOPPAN said the integration of BOPP and BOPE production will accelerate the development of high-value packaging films with improved functionality, such as enhanced heat resistance and sealability, reinforcing the Group’s position in global sustainable packaging markets.
