Smurfit Westrock has completed the acquisition of assets from Cartomanabí, a corrugated packaging producer based in Montecristi, Ecuador, marking the company’s first transaction since the formation of Smurfit Westrock and reinforcing its presence in Latin America.
The deal represents another step in the company’s regional growth strategy and further consolidates its position as the largest supplier of corrugated packaging in Latin America. By integrating the Cartomanabí operation into its network and supplying paper from its North American mill system, Smurfit Westrock also aims to strengthen its vertically integrated supply chain across the region.
Founded in 2020, Cartomanabí operates a corrugated packaging facility with an annual production capacity exceeding 50,000 tonnes. The company primarily serves customers in the agriculture, protein, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and industrial sectors—industries that rely heavily on corrugated packaging for transport and export logistics.
The acquisition provides Smurfit Westrock with an expanded platform to capture growing demand for corrugated packaging in Ecuador, while also improving its ability to support regional customers across Latin America.
Álvaro Henao, President and CEO of Smurfit Westrock Latin America, described the deal as a significant milestone for the company in the region.
“The transaction in Ecuador is our first as Smurfit Westrock. It is an important milestone for us in Latin America, where we are the only pan-regional supplier with a fully integrated supply chain and the broadest range of sustainable and innovative paper-based solutions,” he said.
He added that the company intends to leverage its expertise and innovation capabilities to support customers in the Ecuadorian market.
“We look forward to working together with customers in this country and sharing all our knowledge, expertise and value-driven innovation.”
Smurfit Westrock, which operates in 40 countries across Latin America, North America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and Asia-Pacific, has been expanding its integrated packaging network to respond to growing demand for sustainable paper-based packaging solutions.
With the addition of the Cartomanabí facility, the company further strengthens its ability to support customer growth in Ecuador and across the broader Latin American region.
