Mondi Highlights the Role of Packaging Design in Cutting Food Waste Across Global Supply Chains

Mondi has released a new white paper examining how purpose-built corrugated packaging can help food producers and retailers preserve product quality and reduce waste in increasingly complex supply chains.

The report, titled “Turning Packaging into a Competitive Advantage in the Food Supply Chain,” argues that mounting logistical pressures and performance shortcomings in packaging are contributing to product losses, operational disruptions and reputational risk. As supply chains grow more intricate, companies face the dual challenge of maintaining product integrity while navigating margin constraints and rising consumer expectations.

Consumer behavior is amplifying these pressures. Research cited in the report indicates that 70% of shoppers will not purchase visibly damaged goods, underscoring the commercial importance of maintaining consistent on-shelf presentation. For producers and retailers, even minor lapses in packaging performance can translate into lost sales and diminished brand trust.

The white paper positions corrugated packaging as more than a protective layer, framing it instead as a strategic lever for improving supply chain resilience and reducing waste. With roughly one-third of global food production lost each year, incremental improvements in packaging design can have a measurable impact on both operational efficiency and profitability.

According to the report, well-engineered corrugated solutions can enhance load stability, withstand stacking pressures, streamline packing processes and protect products during extended distribution cycles. These benefits are particularly relevant as supply chains stretch across longer distances and involve multiple handling points.

“Packaging plays a vital role in preventing food waste. When designed strategically, it helps protect product value, support reliable operations and reduce the hidden costs that often accumulate under challenging supply chain conditions,” said Paulus Goëss, COO Corrugated Solutions at Mondi.

The findings provide practical guidance for companies seeking to strengthen supply chain performance while addressing category-specific challenges. The approaches outlined can be applied across a wide range of food segments, including fresh produce, snacks, confectionery and chilled products, enabling businesses to deliver consistent quality at scale while mitigating waste-related losses.
