Huhtamaki, Tetra Pak and Zipform Drive Formation of Australian Fibre-Based Packaging Alliance

Huhtamaki, Tetra Pak, and Zipform Packaging have launched the Australian Fibre-Based Packaging Alliance (AFBPA), a newly formed cross-industry group aiming to “ensure the role of fibre-based packaging in a circular economy is properly recognised,” packagingnews.com.au reports. The alliance brings together businesses producing and using fibre-based packaging across Australia.

With increasing adoption of fibre-based formats in “food and food service applications due to its renewable origins, recyclability and performance,” the AFBPA says it will focus on supporting “the development of systems and infrastructure for effective recovery, sorting and recycling of fibre-based packaging.” A key objective is to “define recyclability in the Australian context.”

Describing itself as a “cross-industry initiative with the goal of boosting fibre-based packaging’s contribution to a low-carbon, circular economy,” the alliance will work to establish “an industry roadmap,” support “science-based design guidelines,” and promote innovation. It also plans to engage with “consumers, industry and policy makers on the material’s environmental benefits and functionality.”

The alliance has stated it “will not operate for profit, nor represent the specific interests of individual parties.”
