Smurfit Westrock to Invest $19.3m in Mississippi Expansion

Smurfit Westrock has announced a $19.3 million expansion of its corrugated packaging facility in Saltillo, Mississippi, strengthening its manufacturing footprint in the region.

The Fortune 500 company, which positions itself as a global leader in sustainable paper and packaging materials, plans to install new equipment to convert container board into foldable boxes. The investment is expected to increase production capacity at the site by 50% and enable the manufacture of larger corrugated boxes.

Governor Tate Reeves welcomed the announcement, saying, “The decision by the Smurfit Westrock team to expand in Saltillo reinforces what so many already know — Mississippi is a manufacturing powerhouse. When products are made in Mississippi, consumers know they are getting top-quality goods made by a workforce that takes pride in craftsmanship.”

Laurent Sellier, President and CEO of Smurfit Westrock North America, said the project reflects the company’s long-term commitment to operational growth in the U.S. market. “Smurfit Westrock is committed to optimizing the performance and value of its manufacturing operations,” Sellier said. “The expansion of the Saltillo facility demonstrates our ongoing collaboration with development partners in Mississippi, increases capacity and growth within our system, and supports the communities where we live and work.”

The Mississippi Development Authority is backing the project through its Flexible Tax Incentive programme, with additional support from Lee County. Smurfit Westrock expects the expansion to be completed by October 2026.
