Innovative Student Designs Shine in Paperboard Packaging Challenge

Innovative, sustainable, and plastic-free packaging solutions for garlic and potatoes have emerged as the winning designs in the 2024 Student Design Challenge hosted by the Paperboard Packaging Alliance (PPA). Students from three top universities have crafted exceptional packaging concepts, demonstrating creativity and commitment to sustainability in the annual competition.

This year’s challenge focused on designing new paper-based packaging for fresh produce. The finalists include:

• Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) for their “Grovey Garlic” packaging.
• Pennsylvania College of Art and Design (PCAD) for their “SPUDS” packaging, aimed at reducing food waste and promoting sustainability.
• California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) for their “Lively Roots” organic baby golden potatoes packaging.

The finalists will present their designs at the Paperboard Packaging Council’s Fall Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, competing for a cash prize and industry recognition. This competition has been a platform for students to innovate in sustainable packaging since 2018. Former winner Kelly Fellner, now a notable figure in sustainable package design, will serve as a guest judge.
