Mondi Positions Fresh Fibre Fluting Grades For High-Humidity And Heavy-Duty Packaging Applications

Mondi is promoting its semi-chemical fluting portfolio for corrugated packaging applications where boxes must withstand long-distance transport, cold storage, humidity and other demanding handling conditions.

The company said its premium grades are aimed at supply chains in which packaging performance is closely tied to product protection, particularly for goods moving through complex logistics networks or exposed to fluctuating climate conditions. The portfolio includes ProVantage Powerflute®, ProVantage Frescoflute and ProVantage Aquaflute, each positioned for specific converting, storage and transport requirements.

According to Mondi, ProVantage Powerflute® is made from 100% fresh fibre and has been developed for applications requiring maximum strength and resistance to variable climates. ProVantage Frescoflute is presented as offering strong dimensional stability and compression strength during processing and storage, while ProVantage Aquaflute is intended for environments where short-term moisture and water resistance are required.

The company said these containerboard grades are used in sectors with particularly demanding packaging needs, including fresh fruit and vegetables, dairy and deep-frozen products, meat, poultry and seafood. Mondi also highlighted industrial, chemical and automotive applications as part of the addressable market for the range, underlining the broader relevance of semi-chemical fluting beyond food packaging.

Mondi argues that paper selection and grade combination across the corrugated structure are central to delivering packaging that is both efficient and robust. In its view, the optimisation of all layers in the corrugated pack can support right-weighting strategies, allowing converters and brand owners to reduce unnecessary material use while maintaining the protection needed during converting, packing and distribution.

A key part of the company’s argument is the comparative performance of fresh fibre-based semi-chemical fluting against waste-based alternatives. Mondi said fresh fibre-based grades offer significantly lower creep parameters, which it described as important for corrugated boxes needing to retain stacking strength over time when subjected to changing humidity and load conditions. That issue is especially relevant in supply chains involving palletised transport, warehousing or chilled and frozen environments, where the mechanical behaviour of the box can directly affect product integrity.

To support performance validation, Mondi said it provides customers with advanced creep testing designed to simulate real-life transport conditions. The aim, according to the company, is to help reduce the risk of packaging failure and product damage by giving customers a clearer picture of how material choices will behave in practical use.

“In demanding supply chains, material choice is key to ensuring packaging performance,” said Gijs Huisman, Sales Director for Mondi’s containerboard business. “Our premium semi-chemical fluting grades leverage the strength of fresh fibre to deliver excellent creep performance, enabling reliable, high-quality solutions. We support our customers to create packaging that arrives exactly as intended, no matter how complex the product or its journey.”

The announcement reflects continued emphasis across the packaging sector on matching paper performance more precisely to end-use conditions, particularly where corrugated transit packs must handle moisture, compression and extended distribution cycles without compromising pack integrity. Mondi is positioning its semi-chemical fluting range as a response to those requirements, with a focus on humidity resistance, dimensional stability and stacking performance in use cases where failure can lead to product loss or logistics disruption.
