Borealis Introduces Borcycle M with 85% PCR Content for Sustainable Packaging Solutions

Borealis has announced the launch of Borcycle™ M CWT120CL, a high-performance, recycled linear low-density polyethylene (rLLDPE) grade that contains 85% post-consumer recyclate (PCR). This new grade is designed for non-food flexible packaging applications and underscores the company’s commitment to advancing circularity in plastics production.

The innovative material is developed through Borealis’ mechanical recycling technology, a process that delivers high-quality recycled materials in an energy-efficient manner. With 85% PCR content and a 15% LLDPE booster, Borcycle™ M CWT120CL is positioned to meet the growing demand for sustainable packaging solutions, particularly in high-end applications that require superior stretchability, toughness, and an excellent balance of stiffness.

Key Applications and Performance Benefits

Borcycle™ M CWT120CL is ideal for blown film applications across primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging. Some of its key applications include stretch film, stretch hoods, and films used in agricultural, industrial, and protective packaging. Its low gel content and exceptional stretchability, coupled with an outstanding toughness-stiffness balance, make it a versatile material that can meet the rigorous performance demands of flexible packaging.

By using this new grade, Borealis’ customers can reduce the carbon footprint of their products and contribute to achieving their sustainability targets. The material aligns with the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) requirements, offering a circular solution without compromising on product performance.

A Milestone in Circular Economy

Developed in collaboration with Ecoplast, a member of the Borealis Group, the new grade marks a significant milestone in Borealis’ ambition to accelerate the transition to a circular economy. The project began in late 2022, and after more than two years of development, Borcycle™ M CWT120CL was launched in January 2025. The grade’s introduction is a result of overcoming the technical challenges of incorporating a high proportion of recycled content into flexible packaging materials while maintaining the demanding performance standards required by industry.

Peter Voortmans, Borealis’ Commercial Director for Consumer Products Flexibles, commented: “With its impressive 85% post-consumer recyclate content, this new rLLDPE grade represents a major step on the path to a circular economy for plastics. Borcycle™ M CWT120CL will help our customers meet their sustainability targets while maintaining the high performance standards required for demanding flexible packaging applications—just one of the ways we’re re-inventing essentials for sustainable living.”

Showcasing at PRSE Amsterdam

Borealis will be showcasing samples of Borcycle™ M CWT120CL at the upcoming PRSE (Plastic Recycling Show Europe) in Amsterdam, taking place on April 1–2, 2025. Visitors can learn more about the product and its sustainable packaging applications by visiting Borealis at Stand K80, Hall 5.

Borcycle™ M CWT120CL exemplifies Borealis’ ongoing dedication to driving sustainability and circularity in the plastics industry, ensuring a future where packaging is both high-performing and environmentally responsible.
