AIMEN Joins European Project to Boost Organic-Based Plastics in Packaging

AIMEN Technology Centre is playing a key role in the European BIOMAC project, which aims to reduce reliance on petroleum-based polymers by advancing the use of organic-based plastics, particularly in the packaging sector. Funded by the EU’s Horizon 2020 program, BIOMAC brings together 33 partners from 12 countries to create an open innovation ecosystem for developing and commercializing bio-based nanomaterials and biopolymers.

The project focuses on using biomass to produce advanced biopolymers that can be applied across various industries, with a strong emphasis on packaging. One of BIOMAC’s primary goals is to create biodegradable and biocompostable packaging materials with enhanced properties, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.

AIMEN leads the project’s 3D printing pilot plant, where materials like PLA and bio-based resins are being tested for packaging applications. The initiative also aims to overcome barriers to commercialization, fostering a circular economy by providing open access to innovative biomaterial solutions.

With a budget of €16.5 million, BIOMAC is set to make significant contributions to the packaging industry by promoting environmentally friendly materials that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, paving the way for more sustainable packaging solutions.
