Amcor has expanded its flexible packaging operations in northern Italy with a new production line dedicated to recycle-ready high-barrier films, as the company positions itself to support food and beverage brands transitioning to more sustainable packaging formats.
The investment at the company’s Lugo di Vicenza facility adds nearly 7,000 m² of new production space designed to support the full manufacturing process for high-barrier films used in flexible packaging.
According to the company, the expansion will enable large-scale production of advanced materials such as AmLite HeatFlex, a high-barrier film developed for retort applications where packaging must withstand the high temperatures used during sterilisation.
The films produced at the facility are intended for a range of packaging applications, including lidding films and pouches for food, beverage, pet food and healthcare products. Amcor said the new production capabilities will strengthen its portfolio of recycle-ready flexible packaging solutions while maintaining the barrier performance required to protect product quality.
Elena Peron, plant general manager at the Lugo site, said the investment reflects the company’s broader sustainability commitments.
“This new facility is the result of Amcor’s pledge to develop all our packaging to be recyclable, reusable or compostable.”
The newly extended production department also includes infrastructure designed to ensure consistent material performance. The facility features a dedicated quality control laboratory alongside a fully automated high-density warehouse equipped with temperature-controlled chambers used to cure packaging materials during production.
These capabilities are designed to support strict quality standards for high-performance films that require precise barrier properties to protect packaged products from oxygen, moisture and other environmental factors.
Peron added that the investment will help customers transition toward more sustainable packaging solutions.
“This expansion, combined with the Amcor team’s expertise, will support our customers in making the switch to recycle-ready packaging and contribute to a more circular packaging industry.”
Demand for recyclable flexible packaging is growing as consumer goods companies face increasing pressure to reduce environmental impact and comply with upcoming regulatory requirements. Among these is the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which is expected to require many packaging formats placed on the market to be recyclable by 2030.
Amcor said the expanded Lugo site will strengthen its ability to support brands seeking alternatives to traditional multi-material packaging structures while maintaining shelf life and product safety for packaged foods and beverages.
