South Mill Champs Replaces Plastic with Biodegradable Bamboo Packaging in Retail Launch

South Mill Champs (SMC), a major North American mushroom grower and supplier, has partnered with Sprouts Farmers Market in Denver, Colorado, to debut its new flow-wrapped bamboo tills—a move the company describes as a significant step in its sustainable packaging strategy. Sprouts becomes the first retailer to stock South Mill Champs’ mushrooms in this innovative, eco-friendly packaging.

“We are dedicated to continuous improvements in our sustainable growing practices,” said Sandy Malouff-Quintana, Vice President of Fresh Sales at South Mill Champs. “Our responsible production methods allow us to grow and produce wholesome mushroom products for consumers, foodservice, and retail.”

The packaging combines flow wrap made from BOPP (Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene) film with biodegradable bamboo tills, offering multiple environmental and performance benefits. The BOPP film perforation enables natural evaporation, which helps maintain optimal quality, extends shelf life, and prevents discoloration from condensation, reducing the risk of spoilage. Additionally, the flow wrap technology minimizes material waste, as the film is precisely cut to fit each product.

The bamboo tills, which replace traditional plastic versions, are recyclable and biodegradable. According to the company, “Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource that uses less water than trees and can be harvested without over-harvesting.” These tills are “naturally heat resistant with minimal moisture absorption,” use “no chemical coatings,” and are “produced without fossil fuels.”

“As a business which focuses on responsibly grown mushrooms, from start to finish, we are uniquely positioned to help our customers practice sustainability and inspire others,” Malouff-Quintana said. “Packaging can be a powerful tool—using eco-friendly materials sends the message that we are serious about helping the environment.”

The move aligns with South Mill Champs’ broader sustainability initiative focused on “nourishing responsibly” by shifting away from heavy plastics and non-recyclable packaging. The company aims to “reduce their overall carbon footprint” and support retailers with “innovative and environmentally conscious solutions.”

The new 8oz flow-wrapped bamboo tills are scheduled to be on shelves at Sprouts stores in April 2025.
